Pennsylvania Car Accident Legal Center

Changing Coverage on your Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Policy

You can change your coverage at any time. No one ever likes to think about the possibility of being injured in a car accident, but the time to change your policy is before you are injured. Afterwards, it's too late.

If nothing else, we recommend that you call your insurance representative to make sure you have chosen Full Tort on your policy. If you don't have this coverage chosen already, please change it. With Full Tort, there are no restrictions on your ability to receive money for pain and suffering.

The insurance coverage you choose applies to everyone on your policy

If more than one person is a named insured on your policy, any of those persons can make the decision to change the coverage. However, that person's decision will bind everyone named on the policy, as well as any relative living in the same household who is not insured under a separate policy. The same holds true for your children. There is no exception in the law that protects minors from an parent's choice of Limited Tort.

Example:

  • You and your spouse are named insureds on the same policy and your spouse decides to select Limited Tort. Although you had nothing to do with the decision, you are still bound by your spouse's selection.

  • You originally elected the Limited Tort option and now you want to switch to Full Tort. Or, maybe you previously rejected Uninsured/Underinsured benefits, but wish to carry them now. Your decisions will affect all other relatives in your household who do not carry their own auto insurance.
