Ford Knew About SUV Dangers

August 2005

If Ford knew of the design flaws in their SUVs, would they have sold them? According to internal company documents, they were aware of the defects.

In 1993, company engineers advised Ford to reinforce roof supports in the Explorer to prevent collapses in rollovers. However, since the U.S. government did not require this feature, Ford did not take the engineers’ advice. Three years later, Ford documents prove company engineers believed moving the shock absorbers toward the wheels would help prevent rollovers. Again, Ford decided against making the change.

These shocking revelations and damaging statements were pulled from internal documents, and are now being used against Ford in more than 500 lawsuits claiming that Ford Explorers were defective-in an attempt to put profit before safety.
