3.8 Million Ford Pickups, SUVs RecalledSeptember 2005 Ford recalled 3.8 million pickup trucks and SUVs because a leak-prone cruise control system could cause fires. Some of the Ford's most popular pickups and SUVs, including their best selling vehicle, the F-150, are named in the recall. Ford believes that brake fluid may leak from the switch that deactivates the cruise control once the brake pedal is engaged. The fluid can drip down to the cruise control’s electrical component, causing corrosion and igniting a fire. The recalled Ford pickups and SUVs include:
In March 2005, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a safety inquiry into the cruise control system of Ford’s SUVs and pickups. To date, the NHTSA has received over 550 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch. A number of lawsuits claiming the fires resulted in property damage or death are still pending.
