Air bags alone don't protect against injury in car accidentsAir bags are now found in 3 out of 5 cars in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, 1 out of 4 Pennsylvania drivers don't use their seat belts regularly. With motor vehicle crashes causing 42% of spinal cord injuries, the importance of wearing a seat belt is evident. Air bags deploy at speeds between 140 to 220 mph. If you are not wearing a seat belt, your risk of a neck injury is substantially higher than if you are wearing a seat belt. Seat belts properly position occupants thereby lowering the risk of a neck or spinal cord injury. In a study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh, 86,000 people injured in frontal collisions in Pennsylvania between 1990 and 2002 were analyzed.
