Tire Safety Guide

August 2005

Tires are the only part of your vehicle that separates you from the road, so it is important to keep your tires in check. Before you hit the road, keep this tire safety tips in mind:

Check tire pressure at least once a month

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the leading cause of tire failure is under inflation. Check tire pressure monthly and also before taking trips more than 250 miles. If you aren’t sure about your tires’ proper inflation pressures, check your glove box or drivers door frame for information.

Inspect tires for wear and tear

Pay close attention to any uneven tread wear, cracks or bulges, clumping of the threads, thread separation, and signs of puncture. If you see any tire damage, take your vehicle in for an inspection as soon as possible.

Maintain tires in proper balance

Tires that are unbalanced can cause excessive wear on your vehicle and result in an uncomfortable ride. A good detection of out of balance tires is severe thumping when driving at highway speeds. If this occurs, get your tires balanced immediately.

Maintain proper alignment

Unaligned steering and suspension can cause fast and uneven tire wear. If you begin to feel your steering wheel pull in a certain direction on a flat road, have your vehicle aligned as soon as possible.

Never overload a tire

Overloading is the second leading cause of tire failure. The maximum weight a vehicle can carry is printed on the same label as your tire pressure. Never exceed the maximum allowable weight.

Avoid over-heating tires

High speeds, heavy loads, and under inflation can lead to high tire temperatures can result in sudden tire failure. Be cautious to avoid overheating of your tires.

Install tires in matched pairs or complete sets

Install tires in front or rear pairs or in a full set to prevent unbalanced vehicles.
