Pennsylvania Car Accident Legal Center

Preventing rollover accidents

Our Pennsylvania lawyers are pleased to provide the following information to help with preventing rollover accidents:

While top-heavy vehicles such as SUVs are more prone to rollover accidents, the following tips will prove valuable even if you buy a passenger car:

  • Choose an SUV or car that has added safety features, like side air bags. Front air bags are not designed to deploy or inflate in rollover crashes. While SUV manufacturers are designing safer SUVs, you should still research all safety features for SUVs before making your decision.
  • Never overload the vehicle with people or belongings. Studies show that the more you put in a top-heavy vehicle, the more likely the vehicle is to tip. Bearing this in mind, you should avoid using a roof luggage rack.
  • Always wear your safety belt. In a rollover crash, unbelted occupants can be thrown against the interior of the vehicle and strike hard surfaces, like steering wheels, windows, and other interior components. Unbelted occupants are also at greater risk for being ejected, which usually results in very serious injuries. Ejected occupants can also be struck by their own vehicle or other vehicles.
  • Avoid fast, aggressive driving.

Regardless of what type of vehicle you are driving or riding in, you should:

  • Always wear your safety belt. Most people who die in rollover accidents were not wearing seat belts when the vehicle rolled.
  • Drive safely and carefully. Don't speed or engage in abrupt maneuvers.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Never ride with drunk or reckless drivers.
