Bus rider safety tips
Our Pennsylvania law firm is pleased to provide the following bus rider
safety tips:
Bus safety tips for getting on and off the bus
-
Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early. Arriving early
ensures that no one will be tempted to run after a bus. Children
especially must be taught that running to catch a bus is extremely
dangerous.
-
Stand at least 10 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches.
-
Make sure the bus is completely stopped, the door is completely
opened, and the driver says it's okay to get on before stepping aboard.
-
Before getting on or off the bus, make sure to tie all shoe laces and
secure all drawstrings. These items can get caught in the bus door.
-
Always use the handrails when getting on and off the bus. Using
handrails greatly decreases the risk of falling.
-
Before crossing the street in front of the bus, make sure to keep a
distance of at least 10 feet between you and the front of the bus, and
make certain that the bus driver sees you before you take a step.
After reaching the edge of the bus, look left and right to make sure
no motorists are coming before you cross the street.
-
Never walk within the "danger zone" of the bus. To avoid the danger
zone, stay at least 10 feet away from the sides and the front of the
bus and never walk behind the bus.
-
Never engage in conversation around the bus. Get away from the bus and
into a safe zone before conversing with friends.
-
If you drop something near the bus, never try to pick it up without
first telling the bus driver the situation and having him or her tell
you that it's safe to retrieve the item.
Basic safety rules while riding on a bus:
-
Sit upright in your seat and face forward
-
Never stand up when the bus is moving. For adults, if you must stand,
hold onto the safety bars or straps.
-
Always listen to the bus driver
-
Don't distract the driver by screaming, shouting, or singing. Keep
voices low.
-
Never put anything out the window. This includes arms, legs, heads, as
well as items like books and book bags
-
Children on any type of bus should never throw balls, fly paper
airplanes, or engage in any other type of horseplay while riding a bus
School bus safety
All of the above basic safety rules apply to children who ride school
buses or transit buses. Bus safety begins at home. At a minimum, parents
should teach their children the basic safety rules for getting on and
off the bus safely. Once on the bus, children should know how to behave
safely during the ride.
