School bus safety tips for motorists

School bus safety tips should be followed by all motorists to prevent bus accidents. Motorists who see any type of bus loading or unloading passengers should always be on alert. In the case of transit buses, passengers may be crossing the street to get to the bus or to their parked cars. It is important to watch for these situations.

Drivers should also be aware of sudden stops from transit buses. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the bus. Be alert for signals that the bus may be stopping.

School buses and motorists

Everyone who drives a vehicle must observe traffic safety rules around school buses. In all 50 states, it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

In every state, bus drivers use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. When motorists see the yellow flashing lights, they must slow down and prepare to stop.

In every state, bus drivers use red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm to alert motorists that the bus is stopped and that children are getting on or off. When motorists see the red flashing lights and the extended stop sign arm, they must stop and wait until the lights are turned off and the stop sign arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving again.

Motorists should always look out for children, but especially during those hours when children are most likely traveling to and from school. All drivers should drive well under the speed limit when they see children who may be walking in the street or gathered at bus stops.
